    In A Half Shell

30 cubic yards (that's approx 30 , 000 pounds) of oyster shells from a network of NYC oyster bars & restaurants are being delivered to the Billion Oyster Project on Govenors Island , which kicks off their year-long journey of being cleaned , set and planted back into the water as structures for baby oyster growth . Oysters naturally want to anchor themselves to other oysters as they try to find a plac . . .

11 FEB: Pearl diving was the mainstay of Bahrain's economy until it fell victim to competition from cheap cultivated pearls and most divers switched to the oil sector . Traditional buildings that once housed the pearling community were left to crumble . But some have now been given a new lease of life by a major restoration project led by the Shaikh Ebrahim Center for Culture and Research . The World . . .

I remove a lot of old conservation work that has been poorly executed , is excessive or just improper . Here I’m removing g the white lead used to adhere a large canvas patch to the back of a painting . With the canvas peeled back I can use solvents to soften the white lead and scalpel to remove it . You can see just how small the tear is and just how excessive the patch was . I’ll clean the residu . . .

Keying our a stretcher is an essential part of ensuring that the canvas stays stable . By inserting these triangular wedges into the floating blind bridle joint (woodworkers , corrrect me if wrong- I actually don’t know if there’s a name for this joint other than “stretcher bar joint” . . . ) and hammering them in a bit we can expand the joint and add tension to the painting . The small hole is f . . .

With all of the protrusions removed from the verso of the canvas I can now focus my attention on the face of the painting . All of the residue of the old retouching and the old fill-in needs to be removed . Using a sharp scalpel I’ll slowly scrape and chip away all of that material that doesn’t belong on the painting . #artrestoration #artconservation #restoration #conservation #art #fineart #pai . . .

With the painting stretched and the keys secured I can now focus on the face of the painting . The first step is to fill in the missing paint . There are several chips , gouges and other areas where the paint is missing . Before I can retouch it I need to fill it in . Once the fill in medium is dry I can remove the excess leaving only what’s necessary . Once this is complete I’ll begin retouching . # . . .

    Another talking head video . This one addressed my pace of work . Frankly , I’d like to have twice as much work as I do and have to work harder and faster- I like the challenge ! #artrestoration #artconservation #restoration #conservation #art #fineart #painting #canvas #oilpaint #chicago #paintingconservation #arthistory #paintingrestoration #bfar

Brand new beautiful stretcher , fresh Belgian linen strip lining and a handful of steel tacks . . . simple and clean . There’s nothing I’m doing here that hasn’t been done for hundreds of years- sure the materials are refined and perhaps having done this countless times gives me an edge . . . but sometimes the wheel doesn’t need reinvention . #artrestoration #artconservation #restoration #conservat . . .

It’s Friday and that means varnishing ! There’s nothing like watching a painting come back to life as the varnish is applied . It’s during this moment that the true colors are revealed , the quality of my retouching is tested and if I’ve done everything right it all comes together perfectly . Sometimes it doesn’t and I have to start over but that happens less and less these days . I’ve pro . . .
